Can-Am Commander 1000 DPS Family Features and Benefits

» Performance

Rotax 800 V-Twin engine
The liquid-cooled, single-overhead-cam power plant is powerful and efficient. It has four valves per cylinder and is fed by a 54mm throttle body and two VDO Siemens fuel injectors. The sophisticated electronic fuel-injection system automatically keeps the engine’s performance at its peak, regardless of temperature or altitude. The progressive throttle ensures power is manageable whether you’re engaged in precise rock crawling or opening it up on the straights.

EPA/CARB-compliant design
Located within the side-by-side vehicle’s muffler, the catalyst and lambda sensor meet EPA and CARB compliancy.

Intelligent Throttle Control (iTC)
The throttle-by-wire system teams with the 54mm Bosch throttle body to produce smooth throttle delivery even if the driver’s foot is bouncing due to the terrain. The iTC system can detect unwanted bounces and then filter the input, resulting in more throttle accuracy, especially at low speed. This system also reduces the number of moving parts in the vehicle; requires no maintenance; and has no cables to adjust, lubricate, or replace; and the system has an increased life span.

ECO mode
The Commander side-by-side offers selectable Sport mode, which offers a more linear throttle control for performance driving, and ECO mode, for driving under normal-use situations.

CVT transmission
Continuously Variable Transmission offers engine braking and high, low, park, neutral and reverse.

» Handling

Rear differential
A spiral bevel gear rear differential reduces noise.

Double A-arms front suspension with dive-control geometry
The Double A-arm suspension uses front dive-control geometry, which works to eliminate diving under heavy braking and rough terrain. By controlling vehicle dive, the Can-Am Commander’s handling is more precise in all situations and types of terrain. The front end, which features 10 inches (25cm) of travel, has the largest-diameter front, five-way preload-adjustable gas shocks in the industry (36 mm, or 1.4 inches) for overall durability and better fade resistance.

Trailing Torsional Independent (TTI) rear suspension
Inspired from the world of top-level, off-road trophy trucks, this trailing arm’s design provides excellent control and stability, especially in rough terrain, by eliminating scrub. Wheels move rearward as they move up and down, producing a smoother ride than the competition, and the side-by-side does not waver down the trail. TTI reduces tire wear and has 75 percent fewer parts than competitive designs. The durable rear end features 10 inches (25 cm) of travel and the largest-diameter rear, five-way preload-adjustable gas shocks in the industry (36 mm, or 1.4 inches) for reduced fading.

11-inch (27.9cm) ground clearance
Offers a whopping 11 inches (27.9 cm) of total ground clearance for maximum performance for conquering challenging terrain. We built sag right into the suspension, which lets the system work in its travel “sweet spot.”

Tri-mode Dynamic Power Steering (DPS)
Calibrated specifically for use in the Commander line of side-by-side vehicles, BRP’s Tri-Mode DPS system offers variable steering assistance and is designed to offer less assist at high speed and more assist at low speed. It also allows the driver to dial in his or her preference with three modes (Hi, Med, Lo).

Visco-Lok QE
All DPS-equipped models come with the Visco-Lok QE calibration, providing an even quicker engagement of the front differential. It progressively transfers power from a slipping front wheel to the gripping one – automatically, with no buttons to push or levers to pull. Plus, there’s no wheel-hop or driveline wind-up, so the system is totally transparent to the driver and extremely easy to steer. It can lock up to 100 percent with no rev- or speed-limiter. This differential, unlike some competitors’ differentials, does not have a speed- or rev-limiter. DPS and Visco-Lok QE, when combined, improve handling and performance in slow-speed, technical terrain.

214mm disc brakes with twin-piston calipers
This vehicle has front and rear outboard disc brakes with 214mm discs and twin-piston calipers.

New 14-inch (35cm) cast-aluminum wheels
For 2015, the Commander 1000 DPS gets new, durable, silver-colored cast-aluminum wheels, for a unique look.

27-inch (60.6cm) Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires
Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires feature a rugged six-ply radial construction, yet are lightweight to cut down on unsprung weight. The nondirectional tires absorb the terrain for a smooth ride and provide predictable cornering. They’re also very capable at climbing and clawing across roots, rocks and other tough terrain.

Color options
The Commander DPS is available in Can-Am Yellow or new Light Grey with Can-Am Red graphics.

» Rider-Focused Design

Reduced cockpit heat
Can-Am engineers added heat-shield foil to four key areas of the Commander cockpit to reduce the amount of heat reaching the occupants.

Dual-level cargo box
The Commander 1000 features the industry’s first cargo box with two levels separated by a removable, watertight panel. This offers the possibility of having an upper and a lower bed with an independent tailgate. The total carrying capacity of the box is 600 pounds (400 pounds upper, 200 pounds lower) – the most volume capacity in the market. The tilt-assist dump box can be easily activated from both sides. The heavy-duty, high-strength cargo box is resistant to rust and dents. The easily removable tail gates (upper and lower) require no tools, as these are single-latch, trucklike upper and lower tail gates, with four tie-down hooks located in the corners. There are integrated vertical grooves for plywood dividers, and the optional Can-Am optional trunk lock is available to secure the lower level.

1,928 cubic inches (31.6 liters) of cockpit storage
The Can-Am Commander 1000 family features the same cockpit storage as the larger Commander 1000 models. That means it also leads the industry with almost 2,000 cubic inches of storage in three separate compartments. There are more than 1,050 cubic inches of storage in the glove box and another 799 cubic inches of storage under the fully adjustable driver’s seat. And, in the center console, there’s another 79 cubic inches of space that can be accessed by either occupant.

1,500-pound (680kg) towing capacity
An impressive 1,500 pounds of towing capacity lets the Commander 1000 family tow heavy loads.

2-inch rear hitch receiver
A standard two-inch hitch receiver allows a standard vehicle towing bar and ball to be used with the Commander 1000 family.

Comfort seats with sit-in fore/aft driver adjustment
Our full-bolster seats offer unmatched comfort levels and refine the side-by-side experience with lumbar and shoulder support. Both seats are designed to allow easy entry into and exit from the machine. Adjustable fore and aft without the need of tools, the automotivelike driver’s seat offers 6.3 inches (16 cm) of total adjustment.

Removable, freestanding seats
Freestanding, removable seats mean you’ll remain comfortable whether you’re inside the cab or sitting in these seats around the campfire at the end of a long day.

Adjustable tilt steering
The steering wheel adjusts (with a total range of 30.5 degrees) without the need of tools. The gauge pivots with the steering wheel for enhanced visibility.

Passenger handhold and grab bar
The Commander line of side-by-side machines features two passenger handhold locations for supreme comfort and convenience. Located immediately in front of the passenger, the grab bar is designed with ergonomic bends for multiple, comfortable hand positions. The additional left-hand grip bar on the center console provides the passenger an additional handhold.

Dual off-road cup holders
Twin cup holders, located in the center console, have rubber flaps for off-road use.

240-watt lighting system
The Can-Am Commander 1000 family of side-by-side vehicles features the industry’s best lighting system, at 240 watts. Automotive-style projectors on each side run at 120 watts in low-beam mode and 240 watts in high-beam mode.

10-gallon (38-liter) fuel tank
The largest fuel tank (10 gallons, or 38 liters) in the side-by-side industry provides maximum range out on the trail and at the work site. That’s also 11 percent more capacity than the nearest competitor.

625-watt magneto
The Commander 1000’s electrical system can dedicate up to 300 free watts to power accessories, thanks to a large magneto.

Easy-to-use maintenance center
Easily accessible and out of the elements under the hood, a centralized maintenance area allows access to the air box, radiator and coolant overflow. Fuses and relays are also easily accessible.

2-inch diameter, high strength steel, ROPS- and ROHVA-approved cage
Our engineers used the Roll-Over Protective Structures (ROPS) industry standard when designing the Can-Am Commander family of side-by-side’s two-inch-diameter, high-strength-steel cage. The 2015 Commander side-by-side is also compliant with the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA) standards, with side nets, side shoulder bars and cage modifications.

Quick-attach side nets
Easy to open and close using one hand, with one click, the side nets are standard on both sides of the Commander 1000. They are specifically designed to keep a clear field of vision for driver and passenger.

Three-point seatbelts with anti-cinch
Occupants have peace of mind and comfort with the Commander side-by-side’s three-point seatbelt with anti-cinch, a warning alert if the driver’s belt is not fastened properly.

Standard and Performance DESS keys
DESS is the industry’s first standard antitheft device. An electronic code-in key must match the code in the ECU to start. The Commander 1000 family comes with two different keys: One is the standard key, which limits top speed to 43.5 mph (70 km/h); the second key is the performance key, which has no limitation on speed or power.
