Hell On Wheels’ Hot August Nights Quarter-Mile Dirt Track
Perris Raceway

The Hell On Wheels Racing Motorcycle Club pulled it off again, with another Hot August Nights Quarter-Mile Dirt Track. Perris Raceway hosted the show, and joining in on the fun were some of the regulars from the Southern California Flat Track Association.

Now we need to talk about the variety of bikes, people and clubs who comprised the interesting line-up. There were British bikes galore, and of course this means plenty of Triumphs. Harley Sportsters set up for street and track rolled into the pits. Aermacchi-powered Harleys were a natural on the track (once you got them started…), and there were several of them. Briggs & Stratton lawnmower motors powered a flock of minibike riders – and oh, yes, there were scooters, too. Participating crews included Bixby Moto, Vonzipper and BA Moto Racing.

When the racing was done, flagger and trophy girl Diane Strain handed out the trophies to the winners. For those who didn’t want the party to stop at the 10 p.m. curfew, they were welcome to stay the night.

Here are some photographic impressions of the event for you to enjoy…

Racing with the Hell On Wheels crew is lots of fun!
Racing with the Hell On Wheels crew is lots of fun! Their next event will be the Halloween-ish Hillclimb on October 5 at Glen Helen Raceway. Wear a costume if you’re gonna race. See you there!
promoter Jeff Tulinius
What cool shirts the Hell On Wheels have on sale! Event promoter Jeff Tulinius has it good, with his sister Karen Sileski holding down the booth. “I’m always here helping him out,” said Karen.
This is the man with the plan
This is the man with the plan – well, okay, clipboard: Jeff Tulinius, a.k.a. “Meatball,” who said, “Thanks for coming out and remembering it’s all about fun.”
Burly Brand
Burly Brand was out in force, with the Burly Boys. “We brought out plenty of bikes and we’re having fun!” said Sean Delshadi. Note the sign that says, “Go Left” – what else can you do on a flat track?!
A Norton minibike
A Norton minibike? Not exactly, but it looks great, and so do the others here.
This bike that Joe Pape
This bike that Joe Pape is selling is an oldie but a goodie. Does the horny helmet come with it, Joe?

This is the way these two guys start their old motorcycle. It’s a Briggs & Stratton motor that helps give it a spin. What do they do when the Briggs won’t start?
Harley Sportsters
A pack of modified Harley Sportsters get ready to go out on the track. In front of them is a modern bike; no two bikes were the same.
Always a major player in Hell On Wheels events
Always a major player in Hell On Wheels events, Greg Landers was all set to race his Yamaha 100, but then something bad happened. “I already blew the little guy up during practice,” said Landers. Oh, well – Greg still had his Yamaha 360 to race. Nice helmet, Greg.
Monica Gil
Monica Gil (00) is one of those riders who races here on Saturdays with the Southern California Flat Track Association. Her father, Rudy Gil, is the track starter.
There were plenty of photographers in the house, and film crews, too.

Scooter Boy
It’s a stare-down between “Scooter Boy” (left) and “Mad Cow” (8, right). You never know who you’re going up against at one of these races.
Mad Cow going around turn one, udderly fearless!
Keep clear! It’s the “Mad Cow” going around turn one, udderly fearless!
That’s all the flag waving for Diane
That’s all the flag waving for Diane, because the racing is over and it’s time for the trophy presentation.
